Hour of Writes was a weekly writing competition. Each week writers were given an hour to write an essay, compose a poem or pen a short story influenced by current events. Submitted pieces were peer-reviewed and the winner chosen from the top 10 by a guest judge.

Ideas in the form of images and quotes were published on the Facebook and Instagram pages to inspire budding writers to comment on the weekly theme.

To capture the transient voices a quarterly magazine called Ephemera was created. The magazine was a collection of weekly winners, runners-up; as well as interviews, articles and essays by journalists and competition writers.

And in 2015 the Hour of Writes Annual was produced to captured the voices in time.

“For last year’s words belong to last years language
And next year’s words await another voice.”

– T.S. Elliot, Four Quartets
