Typography design tips

1. GET TO KNOW YOUR TYPEFACE FAMILIES
Get to know the difference between a serif, san serif, handwritten, display and script; and when to use them.

2. LESS IS MORE
Use a limited number of typefaces per design. A good rule is one for heading and one for body content. This goes for font weights too.

3. HIERARCHY IS ESSENTIAL
Follow the rule of three:

1) A Heading to catch attention

2) A Sub Heading or Intro Copy to reinforce the heading

3) Body Content to explain the detail

4. EVERY TYPEFACE HAS A VOICE
This goes back to learning about typefaces; each one has its own voice. That voice influences how we read and feel about the text.

5. USE A GRID!
Please, please, please align your text to your grid layout. Nothing screams sloppy design and unprofessional like uneven edges.

6. RESPECT THE TYPEFACE
Every font has been carefully designed. If you distort the original dimensions of a font you destroy the harmony. Please do not stretch or squeeze.

There is so much more to tell you but these 6 tips will help your designs look professional.
